After last year's sold out performance Lee Perry and Professor wanted to come back to Berlin ASAP. With a new release to come on Ariwa - they're ready to shake Yaam's floor and the public again !!! Lost dubs of the 80s The story is that in 1983 Mr Perry escaped Kingston and after a few months in the USA, came to London where Rudy (Max Romeo) brother-in-law, Tony (Seven Leaves) and Winston Edwards brought him to Ariwa Peckham, where he found a creative space similar to Black Ark. He was quite familiar with the Ariwa modified Soundcraft series 2, as it was very similar to his flight cased series 1. He proceeded to record with a passion, laying vocals, and mixing an assortment of tracks, many have never been released. Engineers on these sessions were Sid Bucknor, Mad Professor, and Lee himself. These tapes have now resurfaced, baked and cleaned up to provide a historical insight into Reggae’s witch doctor! LEE PERRY BIO Lee Perry launched his career in the 1950's at Jamaica's famed Studio One where he recorded over 30 ska records for studio boss Coxosone Dodd. A brief period followed working for Joe Gibbs Amalgamated label, before unleashing his own Upsetter label in 1968. From the very first release his unique approach to the studio shone through with the sampling of a baby crying on the massive selling People Funny Boy. Through to 1972 he not only worked with his inhouse band The Upsetters, writing and producing many hits including Return of the Django and Live Injection, but also found success producing The Wailers; Mr.Brown, Soul Rebels, Duppy Conqueror, Don't Rock My Boat, Sun Is Shining and many more. In 1973 Perry built the Black Ark studio in his back yard and went onto produce arguably the most innovative albums not only of his career but also in the world of reggae, including the trinity of Junior Murvin's Police and Thieves, The Congos - Heart of the Congos and Max Romeo's War Inna Babylon albums. In 1978 Perry burned the studio to the ground. In more recent times the Grammy award winning Perry has been listed in Rolling Stone magazine's Top 100 artists of all time, collaborated with Mad Professor, Beastie Boys, Adrian Sherwood, The Orb, and released dozens of albums in his own right. MAD PROFESSOR BIO Neil Fraser, was given the nickname Mad Professor as a child, due to his interest in experimenting with electronics. By the age of 10 Mad Professor had built a radio and telephone system. Mad Professor is a world famous dub music producer and engineer known for his original productions and remix work. He’s considered to be one of the leading producers of dub music, and was instrumental in transitioning dub into the digital age. Under his record label, Ariwa, Mad Professor collaborated with the likes of Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sly and Robbie, Johnny Clarke Pato Banton, Jah Shaka and Horace Andy. Outside of the realm of traditional reggae and dub he’s worked with the likes of Jamiroquai, Sade, Massive Attack and The Orb. Production work for various major labels include: Sony Music, EMI, Arista, Warner Brothers, Capitol Record, and Virgin Records. His best known project and the one that truly established his credentials was 1995’s No Protection, a remixed version of Massive Attack’s album Protection. When outside of the studio, Mad Professor tours extensively, visiting all corners of the globe.
